Sneak Peek at the Mercedes-Benz GLB

Earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz chose to showcase the GLB concept at the Shanghai Auto Show, where many European auto makers such as Mercedes, Aston, BMW, and Volkswagen were front and center. But most notably the GLB concept showcased out in Shanghai seems to have escalated past concept already, with a prototype GLB AMG version spied out and about around the Nürburgring.

The Concept GLB that debuted in Shanghai showcased a compact, rugged crossover that seems to be based in a blend of off-road utility and Mercedes-Benz comforts. With larger, outstretched wheel arches, a fairly high amount of ground clearance, a roof rack, and a very interesting design for roof-mounted spotlights that I think look incredible, the GLB Concept appears to be Mercedes taking a real shot at off-road capable vehicles. I’d even daresay that this vehicle reminds me of, and takes influence from, the ML models utilized in Jurassic Park: Lost World.

Although the exterior appears to be a bit more rugged and ready for off-road conditions, the interior hosts the same luxury quality expected of a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Lots of leather, fine stitching, and high-end plastics come together to create a comfortable looking interior space with room for up to 7 passengers across three rows, with the third row being foldable and the middle row adjustable for the comfort of those in the rear. Up front, the interior design takes strong cues from the recently released A 220 available now at Mercedes-Benz of Wichita, including customizable LEDs across the interior, a single mounted screen that provides both the digital gauge cluster and infotainment center, and more.

Not much information can be gathered though from the prototype that’s been spotted out in Germany, save the fact that it confirms the vehicle will hit production; sources even state that Mercedes will reveal the vehicle later this summer, with the public premier at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. We’ll keep our ears to the ground, and let you know if we find out any more information on the SUV meant to fill the gap between the GLA and GLC, the all-new GLB.
